Cost per TB
Media is only part of the cost of LTO storage. A drive is a fixed cost of $8,009 to $13,329 for a new internal LTO-9 drive, so the cost per terabyte of a whole tape storage system falls the more you store. How the parts fit together is in LTO storage explained, and the five-year comparison with cloud storage in tape vs cloud cost.
What changed
The January and March 2026 editions were compiled from different sources and rounded, so small differences are noise. The clear moves: LTO-6 and LTO-7 media got more expensive as supply thinned, LTO-8 and LTO-9 rose a little, and LTO-10 30 TB held steady. From September to October 2026 the cheapest cartridges held steady too, while the top of some ranges rose.
| Generation | January 2026 | March 2026 | September 2026 | October 2026 |

| LTO-7 | $58-$62 | $55-$65 | $59.99-$79.99 | $62.75 to $79.99 |
| LTO-8 | $65-$68 | $60-$70 | $69.95-$80.00 | $70.25 to $84.36 |
| LTO-9 | $85-$102 | $85-$100 | $92.45-$111.55 | $92.45 to $129.00 |
| LTO-10 | $265-$300 | $260-$300 | $256.00-$299.99 | $259.00 to $299.99 |
Drives are where prices moved: between September and October several sellers raised Quantum LTO-8 and LTO-9 drives by about 20 to 40%, and HPE drives rose as well. Drive prices also look very different from early 2026. The March 2026 edition estimated LTO-9 internal drives at $4,500 to $6,500; seller listings in October 2026 run from $8,009 to $13,329. Part of that gap is method (estimates versus listings), so treat it as a warning to get quotes rather than a precise increase.

Method
We load product pages at specialist tape resellers (Tape4Backup, LTO World, BackupWorks, TapeandMedia, MagStor, DatacenterDisk and StoragePartsDirect in this edition) and record the listed price, part number and stock note. We exclude listings the seller marks as inaccurate and prices that look like listing errors. Amazon, B&H, CDW, Connection and the HPE Store blocked automated checks or showed no price, so big-box and used-market prices are not included. When a new edition is published, the previous one moves to the price history.
