How it works

  1. You describe your archive: how much data, growth, drives and library, sites, budget, team and what the data is for.
  2. Fixed rules turn your choices and keywords (LTFS, WORM, S3, cloud, offsite and more) into weighted needs, then rank 14 products with the Ledger scores. Sizing, setup and steps follow from your numbers.
  3. Everything runs in your browser, so the video starts at once. Download it or share the link.

The answer comes from fixed rules on top of the Tape Archive Software Ledger 2026, not from an AI model, so the same input always gives the same result. It is general guidance, not a design review. Test a restore before you buy.

What the advisor weighs

Each product has a score from 0 to 5 on these 15 points in the Tape Archive Software Ledger 2026. Your message decides which points matter and how much; the ranking is the weighted average of the scores.

What it checksMeaning
Drives and librariesSupport for current LTO generations up to LTO-10, enterprise tape drives and many library brands.
Open tape formatsWrites LTFS or another open, documented format, so tapes stay readable without the product years later.
Data tieringPolicy based movement between disk, tape and cloud, HSM stubs, partial and fast recall.
Integrity and fixityChecksums, fixity checks, media verification, multiple copies and repack for long term preservation.
Access: S3, NFS, SMBHow users and applications reach the archive: S3 or Glacier style API, NFS, SMB, APIs.
Scale and throughputPetabyte scale, many drives in parallel, high ingest and recall throughput.
Security and WORMEncryption and key management, WORM and retention lock, audit trails, access control.
Media and vaultingTracking cartridges, offsite vaulting and rotation, media health, migration to new LTO generations.
Cloud copy and hybridA copy or tier in public cloud object storage next to tape.
Management and APIAdmin interface, REST API, monitoring and automation.
Price and licence safetyLow buyer risk on price rises, licence rules, owner changes and the cost of staying supported.
Easy to leave laterLittle format, stack and skills coupling, so moving the archive away later is cheap.
Easy to start buyingFew purchase constraints: trial or free start, no bundled hardware or minimum purchase.
Common skillsRuns on skills and tools most storage admins already have, so a small team can run it.
Vendor keeps promisesRelease cadence, published roadmap and shipping what was announced.

The 14 products it ranks

Products the Ledger could not rank fairly (no recent release, an unclear product line, or tools that reach tape only through other products) are left out. For backup software that writes to tape, use the tape backup software finder or the best tape backup software comparison.

Questions

Which tape archive software is best for a small business?

It depends on how much data you keep, your LTO drives, your operating system and who runs it. Type your setup into the advisor: it weights price, ease of leaving later and the features you need, then ranks 14 tape archive products with the Tape Archive Software Ledger scores.

Why does the tape format matter so much?

An archive often outlives the software that wrote it. Products that write LTFS or another open format leave tapes that other tools can read; a proprietary format means you need that product, or its vendor's tools, to get the data back. The advisor weighs this whenever you keep data for many years.

Where do the scores come from, and is the advisor vendor neutral?

From the Tape Archive Software Ledger 2026, which scores tape archive products on ten capability areas, vendor credibility, buyer risk and lock-in from public records only. TapeBackup.org is not paid by any vendor on the list. The ranking is the weighted average of those scores, with weights set by fixed rules from your answers; no AI model writes the answer.
